ICS believes that athletics are a positive and powerful motivator for students to perform better in all facets of school life. Athletics is one way for our students to grow and mature as healthy, well-rounded and socially well-adjusted citizens. By encouraging commitment, determination and teamwork we feel that our students will benefit greatly as they will apply these skills in other areas of their life. We truly hope that the students will take advantage of the athletic opportunities offered to them in order to make their school career a richer experience. Our Athletic program is open to students from grade 4 through grade 12.The objective of the Athletic program at ICS is to provide our students an opportunity to be involved in athletic activities in order develop a positive character-building experience outside of regular school hours. ICS's goal is to establish one of the most varied and disciplined sports programs in Africa, ISSEA and ISSAAA leagues with participants who value identify with and practice the ICS Athletic Code of Conduct.

ICS students in all age groups (U12, U14, U16, U19) have the opportunity to compete in the eight school local league (ISSAAA) in Addis Ababa. Local schools compete in Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Track & Field and Cross-Country.
ICS Team sports are eligible to grade 4 through grade 12 students with 3 seasons of sports during the school year. More information about the type and schedule of sports that are available will be distributed prior to each season. ICS works within the international and domestic league seasons which facilitates 8-12 weeks of practice and competition each season. ICS does not offer year round, one sport clubs at any age level.
Teams are divided into the following age classifications by ISSAAA and ISSEA league requirements:
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS (but also including age appropriate Grade 6 students)-U12
ICS students can participate in a variety of sports throughout the year in the three seasons. Teams will participate in the local ISSAAA Saturday morning sports events, which will have modified rules and where results, or league table are not kept.
Students must be 11 years of age or under before September 1st of the current school year and be enrolled in G4, G5 or G6.
Practice is two days a week-3.35-5.10 Monday and Thursday though some teams will alternate one of these weekdays for a Saturday morning practice due to weather and facility limits
MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS (U14)
ICS students can participate in a variety of sports throughout the year in the three seasons. Teams will participate in the local ISSAAA league with home or away fixtures vs the league school.
Practice or match days are Monday and Thursday 3.35-5.15. Some games are hosted at the other member schools and may mean students return to campus later than usual time.
Students must be 13 years of age or under before September 1st of the current school year.
Students in Grade 7 whose 12th birthday falls after September 1st of the current year can choose which age group (U12 or U14) they wish to participate in prior to season, but those students cannot do same sport for two seasons in different age levels during the school year.
JUNIOR VARSITY TEAMS (U16)
HS Students must be 15 years of age or under before September 1st of that year. Teams will participate in the local ISSAAA league during the season.
Students in the U16 category who may wish to play at U19 level need to be selected as a starting player in the respective U19 team or they will remain within the U16 age group division
Practice is three times a week-one 6.00am morning practice, one Tuesday or Friday after school and one Saturday morning per week. Games are either Tuesday, Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings.
VARSITY TEAMS (U19)
HS Varsity teams have the opportunity to travel for volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, track and field, golf and rugby to international tournaments within the ISSEA league.
Students must be 18 years of age or under before September 1st of the current year.
Practice is three times a week -one 6.00am morning practice, one of Tuesday or Friday and one Saturday morning.
Varsity Athletes will have an opportunity to represent ICS at International ISSEA events as well as participate in the local ISSAAA league. International rosters are smaller in most cases than local league ones
Students who are Grade 11 but who are still 15 before September 1st can choose the age group they want to participate in prior to season, but cannot do same sport for two seasons in different age levels during the school year.
ICS Competitive Athletics is a great way to get involved and show your school spirit. Competitive athletics are open to grade 4 through grade 12.
There are 3 seasons of competitive athletics. More information about the type of sports that are available will be distributed prior to each season.
REGISTRATION FOR COMPETITIVE ATHLETICS

- Complete the Agreement Form and turn it into the ASA Office.
- Username: first name, followed by a hyphen, followed by the last name first initial (mick-c)
- Password: your password is on the student’s ID card (this is the same username and password that your child uses to log onto their computer at school)
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays the regular school day ends at 3:20 PM and activities begin at 3:30 PM. Activities run until 4:30 PM while athletic practices end at 5:15 PM. Students not involved in an activity or studying in the library should be off campus.
On Wednesdays, students not involved in Mother Tongue program or CAS activities should leave the campus by 2:15 PM.
FITNESS ROOM CONTRACT 2017/18
Grade 9 to 12 students are permitted to use the fitness room during certain supervised hours posted after signing the user agreement and disclaimer form.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS OF SOUTHERN & EASTERN AFRICA (ISSEA)
The ISSEA shall seek to create, promote and foster cooperation among its member schools by providing a forum for communication and discussion, by promoting activities and by seeking to serve as an extension of each member school’s programs to enhance the development of the students, the schools and the organization through: Academic and intellectual pursuits, Sports competitions, Fine and performing arts activities and Cultural and intercultural opportunities.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS SPORTS ASSOCIATION OF ADDIS ABABA (ISSAAA)
The International School’s Sports Association of Addis Ababa is a local athletic and extra-curricular association. ICS is a full member of this 8 school association and is eligible to participate in volleyball, basketball, soccer, cross-country and track & field events. ICS student athletes from grade 4 are able to participate in three sports seasons each year. There are scheduled league and play-off games with the member schools.
