Recognizing the unique needs and challenges of middle school (grades 6–8, ages 11-14), ICS provides an environment in which students can grow socially and intellectually, while also building the strong academic foundation needed to be successful in high school and the IB program.
All students in grades 6, 7 and 8 must take four core classes—English language arts, math, social studies and science. Physical education and a modern language are also required for all middle school students. The remaining blocks are filled with semester or year-long elective courses.

The Middle School Visual Arts program includes one required class and several elective classes. Survey of Art is a semester-long course that is a requirement once in the middle school years. It exposes students to a wide variety of art media and styles, also incorporating art history and contemporary art studies into each project. Students learn the basics of drawing, painting, and 3D work, hopefully sparking interest to further pursue studies in the visual arts.
The general purpose of the ICS music program is to support the ICS Mission, which is: The International Community School of Addis Ababa, accredited in the United States, develops the talents and intellects of a multicultural student body using learner-centered, holistic instructional methods, empowering each student to contribute in an evolving world.
The music program is designed as standards-based courses that will allow students to become life-long music lovers in whatever capacity. Through music, students increase their awareness of diverse cultures and beliefs, other academic subjects, encourage public poise and can express meaning and emotions. Offerings include: Middle School Band, Survey of Music, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, and the Association of Music for International Schools Band.
The ICS music program addresses the learning needs of the whole child. Studies in music address the physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and aesthetic development of people of all ages. Music engages students by providing an experiential approach to the learning experience. Studying music allows learners to be successful by addressing various learning styles and intelligences
The ICS Drama & Theater Arts Program, as part of the performing arts program, provides students with the opportunity to develop both their performance skills, and their theater arts production techniques. Based on an inclusive, ensemble approach to drama, we believe that the performing arts have the power to enrich lives, stretch minds and change the world. Our drama and theater courses, after school clubs and performances provide a powerful opportunity to use your voice, raise awareness about local and global issues, and enrich the lives of many.
Based on international standards inspired by the IB Theater Arts program and MacRel standards, drama is offered in both Middle School and High School as a semester long class. Stage Craft is also offered as a Middle School elective. Learning through drama is also incorporated in a number of non-drama classrooms.
