Primary Years Programme

The Primary Years Program (PYP), from the International Baccalaureate Organization, prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both within and beyond the classroom.

The PYP curriculum contains three key components, which explains how students learn, how educators teach, and the principles and practice of effective assessment within the program.

PYP Model

The PYP curriculum framework empowers students to inquire and take ownership of their learning process. It prioritizes people and their relationships to build a strong learning community.

By learning through inquiry and reflecting on their own learning, PYP students develop knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and the attributes of the IB Learner profile to make a difference in their own lives, their communities, and beyond.

Middle Years Programme

ICS offers the MYP in the MS (Grades 6-8) and the High School (Grades 9-10).

The MYP is a five-year program, which runs from Grade 6 to 10. These years represent unique stages in learning and social-emotional development. At ICS, we cater to the learning needs of both the Middle and High School age groups, while maintaining a collaborative, aligned program. Students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to undertake the pathway of their choice for Grades 11 and 12.

MYP Model

The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.

The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group, in each year of the program. In the final two years of the program, carefully defined subject group flexibility allows students to meet local requirements and personal learning goals.

Diploma Programme

ICS Addis has been authorized to offer the IB Diploma since 1982. The philosophy and mission of ICS align closely with the IB Diploma Programme. We recognize the need for 21st century high school students to challenge themselves, particularly in their pre-university learning in Grades 11-12. The program aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge—students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.

DP Model

The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum framework is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay.

Through the Diploma Programme (DP) core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service.

Career-related Programme

ICS Addis is a Candidate School* for the Career-related Program. This school is pursuing authorization as an  IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that ICS Addis believes is important for our students.

The Career-related Programme flexible educational framework allows schools to meet the needs, backgrounds and contexts of students. CP students engage with a rigorous study program that genuinely interests them while gaining transferable and lifelong skills.

The CP provides a comprehensive educational framework that combines highly regarded and internationally recognized courses, from the IB Diploma Programme (DP), with a unique CP core and an approved career-related study.

CP Model

CP students undertake a minimum of two IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses, a core consisting of four components and a career-related study.

For CP students, DP courses provide the theoretical underpinning and academic rigor of the program; the career-related study further supports the program’s academic strength and provides practical, real-world approaches to learning; and the CP core helps them to develop skills and competencies required for lifelong learning.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-related  Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further  information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org
