Learning Beyond the Classroom

At ICS Addis, learning extends into the real world through a variety of unique trips designed to enrich students’ academic, personal, and social development. These experiences offer invaluable and memorable opportunities for students to apply their learning in diverse environments, increase their awareness of and interaction with the communities around them, strengthen their connections, and foster intellectual growth. Each trip is carefully tied to curricular objectives, ensuring that the lessons learned on these adventures complement and expand upon classroom learning, while nurturing essential life skills such as collaboration, adaptability, and global awareness.

Week Without Walls

Beginning in Grade 4, Week Without Walls is one of the most eagerly anticipated programs at ICS Addis. This program provides students with the chance to explore Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage while engaging in meaningful service learning activities. Whether they are working with local communities, learning traditional crafts, or visiting historical sites, students gain a deeper understanding of the country they call home. These experiences also strengthen bonds between peers, as students work together in unfamiliar settings, promoting teamwork and mutual support.

Unique Class Excursions

ICS Addis also offers specialized trips tailored to specific classes and interests. For example, photography students may embark on trips to wildlife areas, capturing Ethiopia’s unique natural beauty through their lenses. Marine biology enthusiasts might travel as far as Oman, where they can study marine ecosystems up close, conducting hands-on research in coastal waters. Service learning and global issues trips provide students with opportunities to engage in projects and collaborative workshops that address real-world challenges, further developing their sense of responsibility and leadership. Theater students may even have the chance to participate in workshops or performances in London’s vibrant theater scene, or closer to home in local Ethiopian venues.

Extracurricular Trips

For older students, trips are often tied to ISSEA (International Schools of Southern and Eastern Africa) events, where students travel across the continent to compete in sports, participate in academic and technological competition, or showcase their talents in arts festivals. These competitive and collaborative events provide a platform for students to meet peers from different countries, hone their skills in high-pressure environments, and experience the excitement of international teamwork. Model United Nations (MUN) conferences take students to global forums, allowing them to engage in diplomacy, debate, and negotiation while representing different countries in simulated UN assemblies.
