Throwback: Igniting Diversity, Inclusion, and Empathy Awareness

Throwback: Igniting Diversity, Inclusion, and Empathy Awareness

Let's travel back in time to 10 years ago, to the 2014 School Year.

ICS Addis was a hub for celebrating Autism Awareness and set the stage for the vibrant celebration and building awareness we have today. At this event, the Transition Program team organized and facilitated an interactive discussion on various topics such as sensory needs, functional behavior, transitions and learning styles. The event was attended by teachers, parents, and students participating in the Transition program, which is today one of our services known as STEP - Student Transition Education Program.

It all began with a simple activity, a small seed that grew into a flourishing movement. On this Throwback Thursday, we remember the day when ICS began building awareness around Autism.

Little did they know that this day would mark the early beginnings of Diversity, Inclusion, and Empathy Awareness Month—an annual celebration that promotes awareness. From workshops and seminars to picnics, performances, and movie nights.  This month of awareness showcases the power of unity, respect, and embracing our collective differences.

Looking forward to the ICS community coming together to further celebrate Diversity, Inclusion and Empathy for diverse learners at the following events and activities:

  • T-shirt Sales: Our Unique T-Shirts (which you can see here) and other merchandise are on sale every Wednesday and Friday after school during the month of April. Shirts are 800 birr. You can pre-order your shirt here.
  • Movie Night: Join us at the outdoor Amphitheater on Friday 26 April at 6:00 PM to watch a heartwarming movie "Like Stars on Earth.”  In this film, we embark on an emotional journey alongside Ishaan, a young boy who struggles with dyslexia. Popcorn, pizza and beverages will be on sale. Tickets are 200 Birr and will be on sale next week after school on Wednesdays and Fridays by the Lower Commons and on the International Day on 20 April. Here is a flyer for the event.
  • Family Picnic: All ICS families are invited to join us on Saturday 27 April between 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM for a family picnic. There will be entertainment by a local Ethiopian band plus food for sale, vendors, and activities. We will also provide traditional coffee ceremony for adults. Bring your picnic blanket and basket and join us on the lawns in front of the Office of Learning Tukul. Here is a flyer for the event!
  • Students Invited to T-shirt Design Contest: The Diversity, Inclusion, and Empathy Awareness committee is inviting all ICS students to participate in a T-Shirt design challenge. The challenge is open from 11 to 24 April. Winners of the challenge will be announced at the family picnic on 27 April. More details of the competition are in this flyer. There will be two designs selected. Winners will receive a free design of their shirt, a unique bag and bracelet. To participate, students should submit their designs here.
