Students Rally Community Support for Service Projects

by ICS Student Yanet S-T.

A student-led service club is finding new ways to engage the community in support of their service projects.

The ICS Focus on Service group is a High School service club that fundraises in support of their classmates' service projects. Since 2018, they have provided funding for a range of curricular and extracurricular student-led impact projects focused on wildlife conservation and awareness, access to education, and beyond.

The group has taken on a number of new fundraising initiatives over the past several weeks, including a basketball tournament/ With the the support of several generous corporate sponsors and hundreds of members of the ICS community, the group raised 236,306 birr (more than $4,100 USD) to support community service initiatives.

For the basketball tournament, FOS secured sponsorship and would like to thank La Morena, EASE, Segon Movers, Tong Da Hotel, Arirang, and Ethiopian Airlines. On top of being the platinum sponsor for the event, Ethiopian Airlines provided FOS with a voucher for round-trip flight tickets to Mombasa that was used for a raffle. The lucky winner of the raffle is Adanech Schneider, an ICS parent with two children in EY4 and Grade 1.

"I want to express my immense pride in all the service clubs that came together to fundraise and participate for the basketball tournament. Your dedication and commitment to making a difference in our community is truly inspiring. Together, you have not only raised funds but also gained invaluable life skills that will stay with you forever. Throughout this event, our students have learned essential lessons in coordination, planning, and the art of seeking sponsorships," Service Learning Coordinator Siham Omar said. "These experiences have provided them with valuable insights into teamwork, effective communication, and the power of community engagement. These are skills that will undoubtedly benefit them throughout their lives, empowering them to make a positive impact wherever they go."
