Student Leads Project Aimed at Environmental Conservation

The initial vision for the EcoYouth Workshop CAS project was to introduce high school students to ongoing conservation efforts in Ethiopia and to spark their interest in potential environmental protection careers.

The EcoYouth team is thrilled to report on the resounding success of the inaugural EcoYouth Workshop held on 25 May 2024, at the Upper Commons. This event envisioned as a platform for young minds to connect with Ethiopian conservation efforts, attracted around 50 high school students (aged 14 - 17) from across Ethiopia, all united by a passion for the environment. The workshop featured esteemed guest speakers, including Mr. Smalley, Dr. Pines, Ato Belaineh, Ato Brhanu, and Ms. Rea. Each brought a wealth of expertise to the table, delivering engaging presentations on topics ranging from wildlife photography to cutting-edge climate-smart agricultural technologies. The students' keen interest was evident in their insightful questions and active participation throughout the sessions.

Following the presentations, Ato Belaineh led the students on a guided tour of the impressive ICS Self-Sustainig Garden. This served to not only showcase practical sustainability solutions but also to inspire the students with tangible examples of environmental stewardship in action.

The workshop concluded with a presentation of the newly launched Wild Ethiopia Book, followed by the announcement of an exciting opportunity for the students – the formation of the EcoYouth Club. This initiative provides a valuable platform for these passionate young individuals to translate their environmental concerns into concrete action.

Witnessing the students' remarkable enthusiasm, we at EcoYouth saw an opportunity to expand the workshop's reach by establishing the EcoYouth Club. We are confident this club will foster a vibrant community of environmentally conscious youth who will play a vital role in shaping a sustainable future.
