Student Leads Book Donation Project to Local Organizations

Student Leads Book Donation Project to Local Organizations

A collaboration between students and employees at ICS Addis resulted in a project which embodies the school’s mission.

Inspired by his own experience, Grade 11 student Abraham Demises set out to help his peers at other schools in Ethiopia gain access new ideas.

Teaming up with ICS’s Office of Learning, Operations Office, and the school library, he identified books that were no longer in use at ICS and researched where the books could be most beneficial.

In conjunction with the staff teams and other students, Abraham delivered donations to several local organizations, including the Abrehot Library at Arat Kilo, the Ethiopian Archives and Library Service, and other local educational organizations.

The project also extended to unclaimed lost-and-found clothing from the school.

“This book drive was a way I could help build a book-reading culture and give other kids access to a whole new world, so I had to jump at the opportunity, Abraham said. “The empowerment of students to lead their own initiatives and projects at ICS is one of my favorite aspects of this school."

"This allows us to apply the variety of skills we learn throughout the year, strengthen them, and even learn new skills related to our interactions with the local community. This helps us develop an independent spirit and a belief that we can have an effect on the lives of people around us. I believe these are invaluable assets for our lives inside and outside of school.”

Through this project, ICS students demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and service — living the ICS mission in action.
