Student Leadership Creates Local Impact and Regional Inspiration

At the International Community School of Addis Ababa, community engagement is embedded in our core values. Through clubs like BLOOM, ICS students are learning about global issues, taking meaningful action, and inspiring others to do the same.

The student leaders of BLOOM — Meriam, Sofiya, Rakeb, and Sephora — met with Grade 6–12 students from the International Community School of Dakar (ISD) and their community partners to share the work they have been leading in Addis Ababa. The focus of the exchange was BLOOM’s efforts to address the stigma surrounding menstrual health — a topic that is often overlooked, yet deeply connected to dignity, access to education, and gender equity.

This opportunity to connect with peers across Africa is a powerful example of global engagement in action. They discussed how BLOOM has worked to raise awareness about menstrual health, reduce stigma through education, and provide sanitary and feminine hygiene products to adult and youth organizations that support women in the local community. Through these efforts, BLOOM is helping ensure that young women have the resources they need to attend school with confidence and dignity.

The impact of this work is tangible. By partnering with local organizations and directly distributing products where they are most needed, BLOOM members are responding to real community needs. At the same time, they are challenging harmful misconceptions and creating safe spaces for dialogue — work that requires courage, empathy, and leadership.

What makes this story even more powerful is that their efforts are being recognized beyond Ethiopia. The conversation with ISD students demonstrates how local action can have global reach. When our students share their process, challenges, and successes, they empower others to take similar steps within their own communities. This ripple effect embodies our commitment to developing global citizens who lead with purpose.

At ICS Addis, we create structures that empower students to identify issues, design solutions, and act. BLOOM exemplifies this approach.

Supported by faculty mentors and grounded in our school’s mission, these students have transformed awareness into action and action into measurable impact.

As one of the leading international schools in the region, ICS Addis is proud to see our students serving as thought partners and role models for peers across Africa. Their willingness to engage in honest conversations about menstrual health, advocate for equity, and build cross-school partnerships highlights the strength of our community-centered learning approach.

BLOOM’s story is a reminder that when students are trusted with responsibility, given authentic opportunities, and connected to their local context, they rise to the occasion. In doing so, they not only strengthen our community here in Addis Ababa — they help shape a more informed, compassionate, and empowered generation across borders.
