RIA Cafe

RIA Cafe

Last Friday on October 8, staff were invited to RIA Cafe where HS STEP students showcased their delicious chocolate chip and butter cookies for sale, along with coffee and tea. Due to health and safety protocols, only a few lucky staff were able to visit the cafe and enjoy tasty treats in a relaxed and friendly environment.

The students greeted customers as they entered the cafe, jotted orders down, served the baked goods, and collected money from the bill. They were professional, confident, and prepared. One student was managing the cash register while another was serving customers, and handling the baked goods. At the next opening of RIA Cafe, the students will switch roles so that they each get a chance to learn different roles.

RIA Cafe - which is an abbreviation of the students’ names, is a project that is part of the ‘’Transition Life Skills’’ class which focuses on the application of essential real-life skills such as time management, money management, and culinary skills.

In this collaborative class, students researched recipes they wanted to make, determined the quantities they needed, put together shopping lists, and prepared their own batch of a recipe, while measuring ingredients and utilizing kitchen equipment. Through engaging in these real-life scenarios, students can refine their skills and transfer these experiences to build independence and success in their lives after high school.

ICS is a firm believer in inclusion and students in our STEP program take a wide range of classes throughout their HS experience that focuses on preparing them for their next stage of life.
