Middle School Musicians Join Africa Honor Band in Johannesburg

Eight Middle School musicians traveled to Johannesburg to perform with their peers from around the globe as part of The Africa Honor Band.

Led by from a wide range of professional music educators and conductors, ICS students who attended The Association of music in International Schools (AMIS) this year had the opportunity to learn and play a diverse range of styles over three days of rehearsals and performances.

With a history dating back to 1975, AMIS is dedicated to the promotion of excellence in all levels of music education in international schools in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

This year’s event was the fourth AMIS Choir and the first AMIS Band event hosted in Africa. Hosted at the American International School of Johannesburg, the event was capped off with a gala concert featuring 140 students representing 47 nationalities, coming from 11 schools in 10 countries. “I’m very proud of our students,” said ICS Middle School Music Teacher Carolina Poblete, who recognized her students for their dedication to practice prior to the event. “I can see the profound impact of music on our students and the passion and power of music in them. They experience a practical and profound collaboration, which is at the heart of music. It was a joy to see the students help each other, get together to practice during recess, and develop a deeper sense of community and friendship."

ICS Addis offers students dozens of specialized learning experiences outside the classroom, often including travel and collaboration with their peers, professionals, and experts from around the globe.
