ICS Community Initiative Brings Fresh Water to Brook Hills

by Marc Francis, ICS Teacher
A collaborative ICS service initiative took the next step in its journey over the summer, expanding its positive impact on our local community.
The ICS Maintenance Team helped to install a 10,000 liter water tank at Brook Hills Development Organization, which aspires to transform the lives of a community living in a landfill through education, healthcare, and development. You can read more about ICS Addis initiative to invite the students to play on our campus playgrounds as well as supporting the community's school children.
The funds for this were raised by the Elementary School and members of the ICS community who attended the Iftar dinner. In Middle School, students and staff contributed to strategic planning with Brook Hills in order to create a sustainable service program students can get involved in and the students at Brook Hills can benefit from for years to come.

The 10,000 liter tank is filled weekly for free by the government, which allows for the students to wash their clothes before school and also now take showers each day, instead of once per week. The next phase for our MS and HS students will now get involved with is helping to dig, plant, and maintain an urban farm at Brookhills, looking at high yield crops, seasonal growing, and sustainable farming practices now that Brookhills has the water to sustain this!
We will also be visiting Brook Hills to help build a chicken coup for 30 chickens, which will provide a regular source of protein for the children, helping meet their basic needs in food and water. This will allow Brook Hills to focus their energy on education and empowerment programs, through their own hard work and the help of our students at ICS!
