How Play Enhances Learning in the ICS Early Years

Learning new games. Painting with toy cars. Exploring the playground.
Children learn best when they feel happy, safe, and interested, so what better way to 'teach' than through play? At ICS Addis, our approach to teaching and learning in the Early Years is based on the latest research about how children learn, and emotion plays a large part.
“By creating an environment where the learning is child-led and driven by curiosity, exploration, and joy, we effectively foster a love for learning,” Early Years Teacher Ciara Fitzpatrick said. “Playful learning not only helps students grasp fundamental concepts and skills, but also promotes collaboration, problem solving, and adaptability.”

Playful learning occurs when the learning goals of adults and the interests and curiosities of students align. In these instances, learners are leading their own learning, exploring the unknown, and finding the joy of learning. This type of learning is particularly profound because it stems from genuine interest. When children engage in play, they become fully immersed, engaged, and motivated—a mindset that truly nurtures effective learning.
