Grade 5s Invite Brook Hills Students to Play & Learn Together at ICS

A student-led service initiative in Grade 5 took another step forward on Friday — this time on the playgrounds of the ICS campus!

In an effort to connect with, understand, and offer sustainable support to members of our local communities, ICS Grade 5s have built relationships with the young people at Brooks Hills. Brook Hills is a non-governmental organization that supports a community of families experiencing homelessness within the Korah trash dump. Families can find access to basic shelter, income opportunities, food, hygiene, healthcare products, and education.
In January, ICS Grade 5 students traveled to Brook Hills to spend time with the children there, and on Friday, ICS reserved the Elementary School community’s playground space and returned the invitation. The young people from Brooks Hills came to the ICS campus to play together.
"We are providing students with an authentic and sustainable learning experience that promotes understanding of societies, service, and community building," Grade 5 Hub Teacher Eric Killion said. "We hope these experiences have a lasting impact for all of the children involved. For our ICS students, this activity supports and develops their action-oriented mindset and commitment to serving their communities, which will be exceptionally important as they approach the Primary Years Programme Exhibition (PYPX) and their future as IB students, learners, and global citizens."
