Grade 5 Students Learn & Play with Neighboring School Community

Grade 5 at ICS took another step in building a relationship with students at Brook Hills school.

Brook Hills is a garbage dump in Addis Ababa, which is home to a large community of families who live there and make a living by collecting and sorting waste. The children in the community attend a school on the dump's grounds. ICS students and employees have been working with Brook Hills in a wide range of capacities, including providing clean water sources, donating every day necessities, and establishing relationships for learning and play.

Last week, the Grade 5 students made another visit to the community. They visited the classroom and listened to the founder of the program, Yemamu, explain his motivations behind his efforts to support the community. They planted seeds in the garden to grow vegetables, shared in arts and crafts activities, and played team-building games together.

"We are aiming to make connections, make friends, and help our students realize our ability as a school community to take meaningful, sustainable action to support the community around us," Grade 5 Teacher Ned Symons said.
