Classroom in the Clouds: Middle Schoolers Learn in the Mountains

It was an adventurous week of learning for ICS middle school students, as Week Without Walls returned to the school calendar after several years.

The mountains outside of Addis Ababa set the stage for one of the students’ favorite events of the school year. The aim of the overnight expedition is to immerse students in nature while trying new activities, exploring our host country, and building positive relationships with classmates.

“It was fantastic to see students challenging themselves, taking risks, and developing school culture while spending time in the stunning natural environments surrounding Ethiopia’s capital,” Middle School Deputy Principal Cal Stuart said. “Learning can happen anywhere at any time, and Week Without Walls is a great example of how ‘classrooms’ extend beyond our campus buildings.”

During their trips, students raced go-carts, navigated an obstacle course in the tree-tops, hiked the mountains, competed in paintball, rode a zipline, and encountered wildlife in Entoto Park – one of Addis Ababa’s famous natural environments.
