Athletics News, Mick Cooper, Athletics and Activities Director

A massive Eagle welcome to all our new parents and a big welcome back too, for all of our returning families. It’s good to be back this week and we are sure that your children will be eagerly awaiting news of the activity and athletic programs that will start very soon.

After School Activities

Elementary school: Parents will receive an email mid week with your student(s) code for ASA registration. Students will be bringing home a hard copy of the ASA brochure late next week. In this program, all your questions will be answered, all activities will be listed along with the instructions. Please mark your diaries to the sign up on line and registration will open for elementary school students Tuesday 23 August at 2:45 PM. This sign up is very popular and unfortunately sometimes, not every student gets the activity they want. It is definitely worthwhile having a couple of choices as back up, should this be the case as is having that conversation with your child about this prior. Even though hearts may be set on certain activities, every season, our students revel in each and every activity, even if it wasn't their first choice. Some activities are of course very popular, but are limited in number by space and equipment and sometimes disappointment is unavoidable. Please practice a trial run to ensure your user name and password are working and if you are having difficulties with this log in, contact the IT help desk beforehand. Parents will need to have their device working and ready at that time. Please note, ICS cannot provide computers for sign-up this year.

Middle and High School students will be signing up online Wednesday 24 August in advisory time on their own. Season 1 activities will start 29 August and end 4 November.

Athletic News

Our new season opens with Volleyball (U19 & U16), Cross-country/Track and Field (U19, U16) in high school for both boys and girls and practice and tryouts for some of these teams will begin this week. High school teams practice Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturday mornings including a weekday morning practice.

U14 (MS) will start their sports practices Monday, 22 August in Basketball and later on in the month in Cross Country-MS always practices Mondays and Thursdays after school (finish 5:10 PM).

U12 sports will start alongside the regular after school activity program, 29 August and this first season will feature boys and girls Cross-country and Soccer. Due to the heavy rain and field conditions these teams will practice on different days this year - these changes are indicated in the Q and A section in the brochure but as a preview to that are listed below to give you an idea.

U12 Cross country: Monday, 3:30 – 4:30 PM and Saturday Morning 9:45 – 10:45 AM

U12 Girls Soccer: Monday and Thursday 3:40 – 5:10 PM

U12 Boys Soccer: Thursday 3:40 – 5:10 PM and Saturday morning 10:00 – 11:30 AM

MS and HS Music, Drama, Art, Student Council, Math Team, Languages, MUN, NHS and all other clubs will be starting shortly and students involved in those programs will be receiving news in advisory time from those Club leaders in due course.

International Trips

HS MUN and Volleyball Teams are both traveling to South Africa this quarter. Please make sure that any extra documents that are needed for these trips are being processed as soon as possible to enable your child to travel through SA border control. This is also a timely reminder that any student going on a school trip needs to have the following valid documents or they will be unable to travel:

  • Valid passport with minimum 6 months remaining
  • Valid Yellow fever Vaccination card
  • Valid Ethiopian ID Residency

The MS/HS language trips to Europe in October do pose more complications for non-EU and North American passport holders and possibly require interviews and fingerprinting. These appointments also take time, so again, if this is a trip that you are intending your child to go on, some front-loading preparation needs to come from home very soon to ensure all documents are good to go.

As you may be aware or are learning, ICS has some of the best facilities in the city. Upholding that community part of the school name means that some of these are available for parents to use for their own wellness. The track, for example is available for use when not being used for our students educational programs. This track area does have rules reference use posted (direction, lane use), and we ask that these are read and adhered to by all.  Before 8:00 AM and after 5:15 PM really are the best times to utilize track use otherwise you will be expected to step off if a class is using the facility. Our track and cross country teams will always be out there after school and Saturday mornings too, they will have exclusive use of this facility on these occasions.  All our fields are off limits right now as they are so wet, but even when dry, the main field is reserved and always off limits to non-scheduled ICS play on it, to protect its quality. We will let the community know when the lower fields are suitable for community use.

Thank you for understanding and support of these rules that are in place to assist safety, usage and programs and not to inconvenience unnecessarily.

Again welcome (back). It’s going to be a great year and Go Eagles!
