Beyond the Classroom
In addition to a rigorous academic program, ICS Middle School students are involved in several programs designed to meet the social and emotional needs of adolescents. These programs include: House Groups, Advisory, After School Activities and School Trips.
The House Groups were created to help build our community and give students a sense of belonging and ownership in Middle School. Each student is assigned to a House Group, identified by one of six colors: Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Yellow, or Purple. Within their Color House designation, students participate in inter-house activities, in Spirit Week, and house group competitions. Each House Group is made up of students from Grades 6, 7, and 8 and provides opportunities for positive interaction among the grade levels.
Students meet in small, grade-level groups at the beginning of the school day with a designated advisor. Advisory provides a structure and a set of practices for monitoring and supporting students’ academic progress and social and emotional development. The aspects of advisory that we focus on are:
- Promoting opportunities for social development.
- Assisting students with academic problems.
- Facilitating positive involvement between and among teachers and administrators and students.
- Providing an adult advocate for each student in the school.
- Promoting positive school climate.

Middle School Service Learning Club
AHope is an orphanage for HIV positive Ethiopian children. The students of the ICS Middle School Service Learning Club will visit AHope on Monday afternoons to read books to the resident children. We will travel via school transportation. You can read more about AHope on their website.
Global Issues, Local Action (GILA)
This course is designed to help students apply their leadership skills in the school and local community. Working cooperatively, students will identify sustainable ways in which they can give service to others and come up with solutions to help build the community. As part of their course of study, students will reflect on their experiences by way of discussions, reflection journals, and other forms of written expression. They will also express themselves through drama and the arts. The class will be results-based; therefore participants must be involved in providing community service to others.
